Bad genes in his case as his father Jack Cassidy had serious alcohol issues along with mental issues (I think today they would classify him as Bipolar) himself. It didn't help that David became a pop star in his early 20's with endless access to booze and drugs and the party life. His half-brother Shaun Cassidy, as far as I can tell, was successfully able to steer clear of the self destructive lifestyle of his father and David.

Didn't he die when he passed out drunk and set his house ablaze by the cigarette he had been smoking?

For many, David Cassidy's appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine signaled the end of that publication's relevance and credibility.

That's the guy. I always liked him. He could play sinister or comic very well, both in great part because of his intense "movie star" smile.

Jack Cassidy was an outstanding actor, handsome and charismatic, equally adept at comedy as the comic foil or at drama as the slimy villain. I've read where the Ted Baxter role in the Mary Tyler Moore show was written for him, but he turned it down, although he did appear in an episode as Ted's brother. If he could have overcome his demons, Jack Cassidy would have been one of the greatest actors of his generation.

David Cassidy, the former teenage heart-throb of 1970s TV show The
Partridge Family, has died at the age of 67.

Publicist JoAnn Geffen released a statement saying Cassidy had died
"surrounded by those he loved". No further details were immediately
available, but Ms Geffen said on Saturday that Cassidy was in a Florida
hospital suffering from organ failure.
