Seems Northern California got a lot of warm rain in December, which gave
'em a bumper-crop of _ Amanita phalloides _, which took fourteen people out
(one died).
Cali has about 50 cases per year on average, one death every other year,
liver-transplants frequently indicated.
so what's with the omelets?
they put the mushrooms in the omelets?
Sure, Amanitas are fine big flashy fleshy tasty 'shrooms, excellent in
omelets.

It's just that several species are deadly.

(And two, muscaria and pantherina, are psychedelic, or at least delirium-
and seizure-inducing.)
ISTR PKD named two entities* in one novel (I can't quite
recall which) Amalita and Borel. Changed one letter in
each mushroom name.
He had to turn them out quickly.
All PKD novels are the same novel, Ubik, except for Clans of the Alphane
Moon.

Southwest Coast of the US, on the Pacific.

It never rains in Southern Cali,

SoCal, on the other hand, is perfectly acceptable to those of us in
southern California (and expecially so Behind The Orange Curtain).
Cuz we like making it clear we have nothing to do with either the

One of my college's history instructors (later to be the

us to say "lull" not "loo." Just a hint of an l before the v.

When I lived in Kentucky (1977-1986) there were sometimes signs on the
buses saying "Lou-a-vull," which was obviously wrong. I heard a few
different pronunciations, both two and three (well, two and a half)
syllables. But I don't recall ever hearing it with a second L sound.

Sometimes there was a sound where the middle syllable should be that
was sort of like the squashed vowel sound many English use for R;
maybe that's what she meant? I wouldn't represent it with an L, but I
can sort of see how one might.

Seems Northern California got a lot of warm rain in December, which gave
'em a bumper-crop of _ Amanita phalloides _, which took fourteen people out
(one died).
Cali has about 50 cases per year on average, one death every other year,
liver-transplants frequently indicated.
Where is Cali?
Perhaps that's a typo for where "IN" California?

Southwest Coast of the US, on the Pacific.
See my post upthread for where IN California the poisonings tend
to occur.

It never rains in Southern Cali,
Not true; and when it does rain, there are problems, as flooding
in Los Angeles because the storm sewers are inadequate, and
mudslides that have followed wildfires because it hasn't rained
for a while till now.
Post by mimus99
and it never stops in Northern.
Heh. We have just had ONE rainy winter after a drought lasting
five or six years, I forget which. As I understand it, in other
parts of the US, the Midwest for instance, if it hasn't rained in
a week and a half they call it a drought. Around here, we call it
a drought when it hasn't rained, not even in the winter, for two
or three years. I remember in the last drought but one, seeing a
skiing-supplies store that had made a mannequin by stuffing
padding into a set of skiing clothes, and positioning it in the
display window, on its knees, hands folded in an attitude of
prayer.

"It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours."

There's no such thing as an average year, rain-wise. It's either
drought or deluge. Drought more often, but deluge often enough.

"It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?

Of course, the original saying, "It never rains but it pours" means that
whenever it does rain, it pours: it doesn't contain a claim that it never rains,
nor does it say that pouring is not raining.

The archaic use of "but" for "but that", "except that", or more idiomatic these
days, "except when", is what has apparently caused confusion to the lyricist.

There's no confusion. The actual lyrics are:

Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

The point of the verse is "People don't tell the truth about how great life is in California"

That's traditionally spelled Kali, though of course since it's
properly written in devanagari and not the Latin alphabet that's not
mandatory.

Well, I can think of two factors offhand:

(a) Where they grow wild nearby (kind of obviously), and

(b) where there are many immigrants who have been used to
gathering and eating wild mushrooms in their country of origin,
and don't realize that the mushrooms here are different, and they
don't know which of our local fungi are posonous.

That last is very often a problem (furriners don't know about poison-ivy
either), but unfortunately some tasty local 'shrooms (eg Lepiota naucina)
look quite a bit like you-know-whats (and vice-versa).

so what's with the omelets?
they put the mushrooms in the omelets?
Sure, Amanitas are fine big flashy fleshy tasty 'shrooms, excellent in
omelets.
It's just that several species are deadly.
(And two, muscaria and pantherina, are psychedelic, or at least delirium-
and seizure-inducing.)
ISTR PKD named two entities* in one novel (I can't quite
recall which) Amalita and Borel. Changed one letter in
each mushroom name.
He had to turn them out quickly.
All PKD novels are the same novel, Ubik, except for Clans of the Alphane
Moon.
